Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

MRI, or Magnetic Resonance Imaging, refers to images produced by strong magnetic fields and radio frequency waves. The resulting images are digitally viewed on a computer screen. Several different sequences are run, in different orthogonal planes, to produce images to aid in diagnosis.

MRI provides detailed information to ordering physicians, and are often ordered in conjunction with general X-Ray. MRI is used to aid in the diagnosis of many things including but not limited to:

  • Ligament and tendon injury
  • Cancer diagnosis or follow up during and after treatment
  • Locate infections, tumors, and fractures
  • Evaluate for neurological abnormalities
  • Pre surgical planning for total joint replacements

Some MR exams include an injection of contrast that travels through the blood stream, to help highlight the area of your body being examined. The Gadolinium based contrast agent is injected into an IV in your vein, Powerport or PICC Line. The contrast agent travels through the body, highlighting any abnormalities in the area of interest, and aides the interpreting Radiologist in making an accurate diagnosis.
