Alan K. Sears, MD, FACS
Tanana Valley Clinic at
Fairbanks Memorial Hospital
Dr. Sears joins the Tanana Valley Clinic General Surgery Department following a 20-year career in both the United States Navy and Army. He retired from military service as a staff surgeon at Bassett Army Community Hospital on Fort Wainwright (2014-2020), where he served as Chief of the Surgery Department from 2015-2016.
Dr. Sears entered medical school planning on a career in family medicine. However, upon completing his surgery rotation Dr. Sears knew general surgery was the right fit for him. He found that he enjoyed the wide scope of general surgery and that surgeons care for a variety of diseases involving the entire body, patients of all ages and a great deal of medicine-including treating the critically ill.
Dr. Sears considers himself a broad-based community surgeon, with the unique experience of treating and caring for current and retired members of the military and their families. This gives him an understanding in aspects unique to the military patient, family and culture.
Interests & Activities
Dr. Sears loves to read, especially classic literature. He also enjoys cooking, listening to music, skiing, kayaking and spending time with his family. Though sometimes hard to fit into a busy schedule, Dr. Sears enjoys running and walking for personal wellness. In addition to the physical benefits, he says time spent exercising is a great time to meditate and think about his life, desires and goals. He also takes time to meditate during outdoor chores, or just while simply sitting outside in the beautiful Alaskan summer and enjoying the beauty of the trees.
