Intracept Procedure

What Is the Intracept Procedure?

The Intracept procedure is a minimally invasive treatment designed to relieve vertebrogenic low back pain. This type of pain originates from damaged vertebral endplates—the interface between the spinal discs and vertebral bones.

How It Works

  • A small incision is made in the back.
  • A thin probe is guided into the affected vertebra using imaging techniques.
  • Radiofrequency energy is used to ablate (disable) the basivertebral nerve, which disrupts the transmission of pain signals to the brain.

What It’s Used For

  • Chronic low back pain that originates from the vertebral bones.
  • Pain that worsens with bending, sitting, or lifting.
  • Cases that show signs of vertebral body degeneration on MRI scans.

Benefits

  • Long-term relief—effects may last for years
  • Minimally invasive—no implants and a quick recovery time
  • Serves as an alternative to spinal fusion or more invasive surgical options
  • Ideal for patients whose pain has not improved with medications, injections, or physical therapy.
