Catheterization Lab
Many cardiovascular conditions can be treated without extensive surgery. These treatments are done in the catheterization lab.
Minimally invasive access to the heart and other vascular structures are done through catheterization. These structures are accessed through the arteries and veins in the arms or legs. Interventional Cardiologists and/or Vascular Surgeons work with a team of personnel to take radiographic images using specialty catheters and contrast (dye). This allows visualization to areas of concern in order to treat them with balloon angioplasty, stent placement, and other various treatments.
The Cath Lab at FMH offers the following treatments for cardiovascular disease:
- Angioplasty (balloon a vessel open)
- ICD/Pacemaker Implantation
- Peripheral Vascular Intervention (balloon or stent)
- Stent Implantation
- Cardioversion
- Implantable loop recorders
- Transesophageal echocardiogram
At the time of scheduling, you will receive information regarding preparation, arrival time, and estimated length of the procedure.
Patients may have to travel to a higher level of care with Cardiac Surgery for heart-related procedures such as coronary bypass surgery and valve replacement.
