• History of Hospice 
  • 1940’s: Dame Cicely Saunders began working with dying patients.
  • 1958: Dr. Kubler-Ross came to United States and worked in major hospitals in New York, Colorado, and Chicago. 
  • 1964: Dr. Saunders began teaching at Yale University School of Nursing in Connecticut.
  • 1967: Dr. Saunders founded St. Christopher’s hospice in south west London. 
  • 1969: Dr. Kubler-Ross published her best-selling book, “On Death and Dying,” based on interviews with dying patients.
  • 1974 First Hospice opened in Connecticut. 
  • Late 1970’s: the Health Care Financing Administration started hospice demonstration projects across the country.
  • Early 1980’s: Congress created legislation establishing Medicare coverage for hospice care.
  • 1986: Medicare coverage was made permanent.
  • 1988: In Fairbanks: A volunteer hospice started called Hospice of the Tanana Valley.
  • 2012: Hospice of the Tanana Valley merged with Fairbanks Memorial Hospital to become a medically based hospice.
