The department of laboratory medicine provides full clinical laboratory services, accredited by the College of American Pathologists. The laboratory is licensed to provide services under the Medicare program and participates in interstate commerce under a CLIA license issued by the Department of Health and Human Services.
The Laboratory at FMH offers the largest on-site test menu in Interior Alaska; providing same day results for most testing, a critical role in timely care to support healthcare needs.

Laboratory Specimen Processing
The clinical laboratory's central specimen processing staff triage all patient specimens that arrive in the laboratory for testing, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This group is critical to the operations of the lab, as they verify physician orders, ensuring the correct tests are performed and the proper specimen is submitted for analysis. The laboratory specimen processing staff coordinates the initial process for all of these requests to ensure accurate and timely patient testing results.
Phlebotomy (blood draw)
The blood or specimen collection centers may be the first step in your laboratory healthcare journey. Skilled professionals expertly collect your blood specimens for laboratory testing to support diagnosis and treatment. Whether you're here for routine tests or specialized care, our team of certified phlebotomists and laboratory professionals are dedicated to ensuring your comfort and safety every step of the way. Catering to patients of all types and ages; with special accommodations for our youngest patients and their parents at our imaging center blood collection location. Phlebotomists are located throughout Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, including the hospital campuses, clinics, and satellite clinic locations. The phlebotomy staff performs hundreds of blood collections each day at the highest level of performance.
Microbiology & Molecular Diagnostics

The microbiology and molecular diagnostics department is at the forefront of infection detection and disease monitoring, powered by advanced technologies like our cutting-edge Mass Spectrometry Microbial Identification System. This state-of-the-art tool enables the rapid and precise identification of microorganisms—bacteria and fungi—with unmatched accuracy. Combined with molecular diagnostics that analyze genetic material like DNA and RNA, we provide vital insights that guide targeted treatments, ensuring swift, personalized care that puts patients on the path to better health. The Microbiology department is staffed by Medical Technologists and Microbiology Specialists who can provide information and guidance regarding available testing methods and indications.
Chemistry

The clinical chemistry department is a cornerstone of diagnostic excellence, utilizing advanced technology to provide analysis for routine and special chemistry requests, including serological testing. Chemistry provides around-the-clock testing for high volume analytes and those requiring rapid turnaround times. The chemistry laboratory offers hundreds of different tests ranging from glucose and cholesterol testing to specialized tests like HIV and Hepatitis Screening. Additionally, offering a wide range of Toxicology or Drug Screening testing for clinical purposes. With a comprehensive test menu, we provide accurate and timely results that are crucial for informed decision-making. The Laboratory Department is staffed by Medical Technologists and Chemistry Specialists who can provide information and guidance regarding available testing methods and indications.
Hematology/Coagulation/Urinalysis

The hematology department utilizes the most current technology and techniques allowing for a wide variety of tests to aid in the diagnosis of blood disorders. Through the detailed analysis of blood cells, critical information is gained to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of conditions like anemia, infections and other types of blood disorders. In addition, the hematology lab performs extensive coagulation and urinalysis testing. The laboratory works closely with our Hematology and Oncology Partners to provide up-to-date testing for leukemia, lymphomas and other hematopoietic or immunological disorders. Utilizing emerging technology our coagulation testing provides rapid detection and therapeutic options for coagulation or bleeding disorders. Urinalysis testing is performed around the clock to assist physicians in diagnosing urinary tract infections and systemic metabolic disorders such as kidney or liver diseases. The department is staffed by medical technologists and specialists who can provide information and guidance regarding available testing methods and indications.
Transfusion Services

The Fairbanks Memorial Hospital Blood Bank or Transfusion Services is staffed by Medical Technologists and Blood Banking Specialists who are active 24 hours a day, seven days a week providing blood products to health care teams for the care of our patients. The transfusion service staff coordinates and distributes multiple types of blood products provided by the Blood Bank of Alaska to patients undergoing surgery or other therapeutic procedures at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. Our dedicated team of experts meticulously matches every transfusion to ensure compatibility playing a vital role in the patients care and safety.
Point-of-Care Testing
The point-of-care testing team provides patients with bedside testing in the hospital and clinic settings. Testing includes finger stick glucose, urinalysis, pregnancy and rapid strep, all in the clinic setting. In addition, tests performed in the hospital setting include blood chemistries, blood, and clotting tests. Results can be viewed immediately at the time of testing by the health care provider for rapid action. The point-of-care team consists of medical technologists and medical laboratory technicians who are responsible for monitoring testing protocols, training other health care providers to perform tests, evaluating equipment, and ensuring quality results are performed at the patient bedside at all needed Foundation Health Locations.
