The department of laboratory medicine provides full clinical laboratory services, accredited by the College of American Pathologists. The laboratory is licensed to provide services under the Medicare program and participates in interstate commerce under a CLIA license issued by the Department of Health and Human Services.
The Laboratory at FMH offers the largest on-site test menu in Interior Alaska; providing same day results for most testing, a critical role in timely care to support healthcare needs.

Laboratory Specimen Processing
The specimen processing team is the lab’s front line—triaging samples around the clock, verifying orders, and making sure each specimen is ready for testing. Their speed and accuracy set the pace for timely, reliable results.
Phlebotomy (blood draw)
Our highly trained phlebotomists are often the first step in your lab journey—expertly collecting blood and other specimens with skill and compassion. Whether it’s routine or specialized testing, they prioritize comfort and safety for patients of all ages. Located throughout the hospital, clinics, and satellite sites, they perform hundreds of collections each day with care and precision.
Microbiology & Molecular Diagnostics
From pinpointing infections to tracking disease, our microbiology team leads with advanced tools like mass spectrometry for rapid ID of bacteria and fungi. Paired with molecular testing that targets DNA and RNA, we deliver fast, precise results that help guide personalized treatment. Staffed by expert technologists and microbiology specialists, we’re here to support providers with the insights they need.
Chemistry
Our chemistry team delivers critical insights through around-the-clock testing—from everyday labs like glucose and cholesterol to specialized testing for HIV, hepatitis, and toxicology. Using advanced technology, we handle high volumes with speed and precision. Staffed by skilled technologists and chemistry specialists, we provide accurate results that help guide timely clinical decisions.
Hematology/Coagulation/Urinalysis
Our hematology team uses advanced technology to analyze blood cells, helping diagnose and monitor conditions like anemia, infections, and blood cancers. We provide comprehensive coagulation testing to guide treatment for bleeding or clotting disorders, and 24/7 urinalysis to detect infections and monitor kidney and liver health. Partnering closely with Hematology and Oncology providers, our experts deliver timely results to support complex care decisions.
Transfusion Services
Our transfusion team is available 24/7 to provide safe, compatible blood products for patients undergoing surgery, trauma care, or treatment for chronic conditions. Working closely with the Blood Bank of Alaska, our technologists and blood bank specialists ensure every unit is carefully matched—supporting patient care with precision and vigilance.
