Robotic Surgery

DaVinci

Tanana Valley Clinic's OB/GYN providers are highly trained in the state-of-the-art robotic procedures available at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.

At FMH, surgeons use robotics to help patients have better, faster and easier recoveries from difficult procedures. The robot provides surgeons with all the benefits of traditional surgery while enabling them to operate through tiny incisions. With smaller incisions, patients can heal faster.

What is da Vinci?
Fairbanks Memorial Hospital uses the da Vinci® Robotic Surgical System. Da Vinci, a well-known system, consists of an ergonomically designed surgeon’s console, a patient-side cart with four interactive robotic arms, a high-performance vision system and specially designed instruments. Our surgeon’s hand movements are seamlessly translated into precise movements for the robotic arms.

The surgical system cannot be programmed, nor can it make decisions on its own. It requires that every surgical maneuver be performed with direct input from the surgeon.  Although it is often called a “robot”, the da Vinci System cannot move or operate on its own; your surgeon is 100% in control.

Benefits of Robotic Surgery
With robotic surgery, patients who once faced several weeks in recovery following open surgery can be back on their feet within days. Through this advanced technology patients receive a less invasive approach to surgery, and may experience:

  • Reduced blood loss and need for transfusions
  • Less post-operative pain and discomfort
  • Less risk of infection
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Faster recovery and return to normal daily activities
  • Less scarring
