Denali Center implements safeguards for COVID-19 by asking visitors screening questions before allowing entry
Denali Center (DC), a 90-bed comprehensive short- and long-term care facility located next to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and part of Foundation Health Partners, has put measures in place to safeguard its residents from the spread of the COVID-19, also known as coronavirus.
All visitors and volunteers must enter through the DC lobby as a single point of entry and exit. Upon arrival, screening for respiratory illness COVID-19 exposure, and use of alcohol based hand sanitizer will be required. The strict screening protocol follows the CDC guidelines and remains in place until further notice to safeguard residents.
“Safety for the DC residents is our top priority,” said Director of Nursing at Denali Center, Tina Rein RN, C, BSN. “The population most threatened by COVID-19 is the elderly, specifically those over the age of 60. Because of this, it's necessary to further protect our residents by doing screenings at our front door."
At this time, the screening consists of a few questions:
- Do you have a fever, cough or shortness of breath?
- Have you traveled out of the state of Alaska in last 14 days?
For those who are experiencing these symptoms or responding yes to screening questions, we will kindly ask them not to visit DC and to head home to recover.
DC recognizes that visits with friends and family is part of the culture of its residents, therefore, staff have offered virtual visits with loved ones.
“We are happy to arrange Skype or FaceTime calls with family and friends,” Rein said. “This allows our residents time with their loved ones while remaining protected from potential symptoms. So far, the virtual visits have been fun and a well-received addition.”
The most important part of ensuring success to prevent the spread of COVID-19 is for people to stay home when they are sick.
Follow CDC guidelines for prevention, which include:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Cover coughs and sneezes.
- Wear a facemask if you are sick.
