Epidural Injections
What Is an Epidural Injection?
An epidural injection is a procedure where medication is placed into the space around your spinal cord, called the epidural space. This helps reduce swelling and relieve pain, especially in your back, neck, or legs. It can also be used to manage pain during childbirth.
Why Would I Need an Epidural Injection?
- Chronic Back or Neck Pain – Caused by herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or general wear and tear.
- Sciatica – Sharp pain that travels from your lower back down your leg due to an irritated nerve.
- Radiculopathy – Nerve pain causing burning, tingling, or weakness in the arms or legs.
- Labor Pain – Epidurals are often used during childbirth to help manage lower-body pain.
- Post-Surgical or Injury Pain – Can help with ongoing pain after back surgery or injury.
What’s in the Injection?
- Steroids – To reduce swelling and inflammation.
- Local Anesthetics – For quick pain relief.
- Saline (Saltwater) – Helps spread the medication.
Types of Epidural Injections
- Interlaminar Epidural – Delivered in the middle of the back. Spreads medication over a wider area. Used for more general pain.
- Transforaminal Epidural – Targets a specific nerve root. Best for focused pain like sciatica.
- Caudal Epidural – Injected at the base of the spine. Good for lower back and leg pain.
- Labor Epidural (Anesthesia) – Used during childbirth. A small tube (catheter) provides continuous pain relief.
Is This Right for Me?
Epidural injections are one option for managing pain. Your provider will review your symptoms, medical history, and imaging to decide if this is the best approach for you.
