What Is Spinal Cord Stimulation?

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a treatment option for chronic pain. It involves implanting a small device that delivers mild electrical pulses to the spinal cord. These pulses interrupt pain signals before they reach the brain, which helps reduce the sensation of pain.

How It Works

  1. Trial Phase: A temporary stimulator is placed near the spinal cord to test whether the treatment helps relieve your pain. This trial usually lasts about 5 to 7 days.
  2. Permanent Implant: If the trial is successful, a small pulse generator is implanted under the skin, typically in the lower back or abdomen. Thin wires (called electrodes) are positioned near the spinal cord to deliver the electrical signals.
  3. Pain Control: You will receive a remote control that lets you adjust the level of stimulation based on your pain. This gives you some control over your comfort level throughout the day.

What Conditions Is It Used For?

Spinal cord stimulation may be recommended for:

  • Chronic back or leg pain
  • Failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS)
  • Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)
  • Peripheral neuropathy or nerve damage pain
