Cancer Care Technology

Accuracy is paramount in radiation oncology. When planning radiation therapy for cancer treatment, it is critical to accurately target the tumor and spare healthy tissue. The J. Michael Carroll Cancer Center at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital does this every day, with every cancer patient.

JMCCC has the highest quality and most advanced cancer treatment technology not only in the state of Alaska, but across the nation. With our TrueBeam linear Accelerator, we can deliver more powerful cancer treatments with pinpoint precision, minimizing exposure of surrounding healthy tissues and organs. This means speed, accuracy and comfort right here at home, for every patient. That’s huge for your peace of mind.

Large Bore CT

The Toshiba Large Bore CT on location at JMCCC is the industry’s largest bore opening of 90 cm with a 70 cm acquired field-of-view. The system’s large bore allows more positioning options for patients, enabling JMCCC’s therapists to capture the images needed for optimal treatment plans right here. For patients, the Large Bore offers the largest opening for greater access and comfort. For physicians, the system’s 70 cm acquired field-of-view provides dramatically more imaging coverage than other systems.

Beyond comfort and capabilities, the superior image quality and large field-of-view of the Large Bore CT helps to ensure healthy tissue is spared unnecessary radiation.

TrueBeam Linear Accelerator

The J. Michael Carroll Cancer Center is proud to house the True Beam Linear Accelerator by Varian. This cancer treatment machine is the highest quality and industry standard for delivering precisely targeted radiation therapy for cancer treatment. And it’s available right here, where Fairbanksans call home.

The state-of-the-art TrueBeam linear accelerator is a specialized machine with unique features to quickly target and treat tumors anywhere in the body. It can deliver more powerful radiation treatments with pin-point accuracy and precision, while sparing surrounding tissue and critical organs, and offers a wide spectrum of treatment options for many disease sites. This means more patients can receive quality care without leaving the Interior.

The TrueBeam delivers radiation for head and neck, lung, breast, abdomen, liver, prostate and brain cancers as well as many other cancer sites. Since this linear accelerator can treat nearly any angle with sub-millimeter precision, it minimizes radiation exposure of surrounding healthy tissues and organs. It does this through advanced features including Respiratory Gating, Hypofractionation, and Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT). It does this through advanced features including Respiratory Gating, Hypofractionation, and Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT).

  • Hypofractionation, or hypofractionated radiation therapy, is a treatment option for much shorter treatment courses. More doses of radiation are delivered per treatment, reducing patient courses of radiation therapy. Hypofractionated treatment plans may be a good option for some breast and prostate patients.
  • Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) is ultra hypofractionation. For eligible patients, SBRT delivers extremely precise and concentrated radiation treatment beams with submillimeter precision. This technology allows an entire course of treatment to be completed in only 3 to 5 treatments. SBRT can be utilized for a variety of cancer diagnoses, including early stage non-small cell lung cancer patients as well as eligible prostate patients.
  • Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) is extreme hypofractionation used to treat lesions and small tumors of the brain. Delivery is accurate to within one to two millimeters, at much higher doses for only a single or few treatments.
  • Respiratory Gating/4D Scan is an advancement in cancer treatment planning, targeting tumors with respiratory motion tracking. As lungs are constantly moving due to normal breathing patterns, tumors move as well. Our Linear Accelerator offers Gated RapidArc ® radiotherapy, which makes it possible to monitor the patient’s breathing and compensate for movement of the tumor while the dose is being delivered.

Such advanced technology allows us to deliver maximum radiation dose to the tumor while saving the surrounding normal tissue and critical organs.
