Our Care

OMM treatments can be specifically used in the treatment of back pain and pelvic pain that some women experience during pregnancy. OMM treatments can improve your quality of life by gently eliminating the musculoskeletal pain and helping your body to maintain proper structure. Treatments may even reduce the duration of labor and prevent complications.

In pregnancy, one of the reasons that women experience pain is related to the postural changes that occur as the growing belly changes the mother’s center of gravity. Although this is a normal part of pregnancy, OMM treatments can loosen up any tight areas that are exacerbating the postural changes, and show you some stretches that can be of tremendous help.

During pregnancy, the body also holds on to more water than normal, which can lead to swelling in the limbs. This can be enough to put extra pressure on the median nerve in the wrist, causing carpal tunnel syndrome. OMM can help by relieving the tension in key spots where fluid tends to get blocked up.

FAQs

What is Osteopathic Manipulation Medicine (OMM)?
OMM is an approach using a variety of hands-on techniques to address the muscular system, bones, fascia, nerves, lymphatic and vascular systems. By manipulating a person's body in this way, our highly trained physicians can address a wide variety of ailments. Specifically, OMM can be used during pregnancy in the treatment of back pain and pelvic pain.

How does it work during pregnancy?
Structure influences function, thus, if there is a problem in part of the body's structure, function in that area may be affected, and may also affect other areas. Our OMM practitioners use skillful knowledge and dexterous hands to physically manipulate your body to eliminate musculoskeletal pain and maintain proper structure. Once proper structure and function is reestablished, the innate ability of the human body to heal itself can then restore full health.

Are OMM treatments effective?
Many patients return to full mobility and experience moderate or full pain relief after an OMM treatment. Some musculoskeletal issues may require a series of treatments. OMM treatments may even reduce the duration of labor and prevent complications.

Are OMM treatments painful?
Treatments are determined by the type of musculoskeletal or fascial issue or injury. An OMM provider will predominantly use their hands and body weight to achieve the restoration of structure, and will explain each technique to you prior to initiating the treatment. Some treatments may cause bruising, but the restoration of proper function outweighs the pain associated with improper function.

Will OMM treatments hurt my baby?
No, our highly skilled osteopathic physicians practice safe OMM treatments that encourage your maternal body's natural tendency toward good health.

Will my insurance cover OMM treatments?
TVC accepts most insurances, and many insurances cover OMM treatments during pregnancy. However, we recommend that you consult with your insurance provider to ensure if your OMM treatments are covered.
