What We Do

Our Care

Newborn OMM can benefit baby by treating nursing and latch problems. Treatments can also be specifically and gently used in the treatment of abnormal head shapes caused during the birthing process.

The birth process has the natural potential to cause structural changes in your baby’s musculoskeletal system. The baby’s head and body have to pass through a small, tight space which can possibly cause overlap of bones and some compression of the nerves and blood vessels. This may be more obvious in particularly large babies, if you had to push for a very long or short time, or if a vacuum extractor or forceps were used during labor. A C-section baby may also have these problems specifically because they didn’t get the benefits of the pressure of the birthing canal, which can help the baby take better firsts breaths or relieve any asymmetry that has occurred from its position in the uterus.

The gentle pressures and motions used by the doctor during the baby’s treatment will help to restore the symmetry of the head and improve the blood flow and nervous function. Your baby may be able to nurse more effectively, and treatment may help prevent colic and recurrent ear infections.

FAQs

What is Osteopathic Manipulation Medicine (OMM)?
OMM is an approach using gentle hands-on movements to relieve restrictions of normal motion in muscles, bones and vascular systems.

Why does my baby need OMM treatments?
The birth process has the natural potential to cause structural changes in your baby's musculoskeletal system. The baby's head and body have to pass through a small, tight space which can possibly cause overlap of bones and some compression of the nerves and blood vessels. This may be more obvious in particularly large babies, if you had to push for a very long or short time, delivered via C-section, or if a vacuum extractor or forceps were used during labor.

What are possible symptoms my baby may have?
Excessive molding of the head and overlap of the bones, inability to suck or feed, frequent spitting up which may be due to the compression of nerves exiting the back of the skull, or excessive irritability of inability to calm the baby.

How can my baby benefit from OMM treatments?
The gentle pressure and motions used by the doctor during your baby's treatment will help to restore the symmetry of the head and improve the blood flow and nervous function. Your baby may be able to nurse more effectively, and treatment may help prevent colic and recurrent ear infections.

Will my insurance cover OMM treatments for my baby?
TVC accepts most insurance. We recommend, however, that you consult with your insurance provider to ensure if your baby's OMM treatments are covered.
