Radiation oncology is the practice of using ionizing radiation therapy to treats a wide variety of cancers, by controlling or killing malignant cells. A linear accelerator is used to deliver high-energy radiation to damage cancer cells' DNA and destroy their ability to divide and grow. Radiation therapy is used to cure cancer, relieve a cancer patient's pain or alleviate other symptoms.

What We Can Do

The advanced technology found at JMCCC offers a wide spectrum of treatment options for specific disease sites. The TrueBeam delivers radiation treatments to a variety of cancers diverse in complexity. This means more patients can receive the highest quality care right here in Fairbanks.

A technological breakthrough, our Linear Accelerator is equipped with a Respiratory Gating, which targets tumors with respiratory motion tracking. As lungs are constantly moving due to normal breathing patterns, tumors move as well. With Respiratory Gating, it is possible to monitor a patient’s breathing and compensate for movement of the tumor while the dose is being delivered. This advanced technology allows us to deliver maximum radiation dose to the tumor while saving the surrounding normal tissue.

JMCCC offers Hypofractionated treatment plans for many breast and prostate patients. Hypofractionation, or hypofractionated radiation therapy, is a treatment option for much shorter treatment courses. More doses of radiation are delivered per treatment, reducing patient courses of radiation therapy. Delivering precise dosages more quickly gives you your time back.

For eligible patients, Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) is ultra hypofractionation. SBRT delivers extremely precise and concentrated radiation treatment beams with submillimeter precision. This technology allows an entire course of treatment to be completed in only 3 to 5 treatments. Less time on the treatment bed means more time doing what you love to do.
