Multidisciplinary Cancer Case Conference

At Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and the J. Michael Carroll Cancer Center, we believe in taking a multidisciplinary team approach to cancer care. Our Multidisciplinary Cancer Case Conference is comprised of a team of physicians and other health care professionals with an array of specialties who meet to discuss individual cancer patients. This means your unique cancer case is comprehensively reviewed by a team of specialists, ultimately empowering you with individualized treatment options.

Our Cancer Conference

Our Conference is an interactive platform for cancer care decision making across all modalities, comprised of a multi-disciplinary team of physicians and other health care professions including pathology, diagnostic radiology, surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, nurse practitioners, palliative care, clinical trials research team, patient navigators, social workers, and other allied health professionals.

A diagnostic radiologist presents imaging studies that are projected onto a large screen for group review.  Some of the imaging studies presented include CT scans (computed tomography scans), X-rays, bone scans, mammograms, ultrasounds and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), among other imaging studies.

A pathologist presents slides under a projection microscope in order to explain the microscopic anatomy of the disease. These slides may look at histology (tissue), cytology (fluid) or even peripheral blood.  Also, pathologists may use stains in order to gain a better understanding of the different types of cancers based upon their molecular markers.

The team discusses the patient's stage of disease, along with national treatment guidelines in order to provide the patient with the most appropriate treatment options available. The goal of the Conference is to integrate patient care, maintain communication among the team of specialists, and empower the patient with individualized treatment options.

The oncology team recognizes that cancer treatment is a personal decision, often times between a patient and his or her family. As part of Foundation Health Partners, our mission is people first. At the J. Michael Carroll Cancer Center, we have a responsibility to take that to the next level and provide a lasting impact on the lives of our patients and their families through exceptional service and clinical excellence. We are committed to providing compassionate, accurate and effective cancer care treatments. After all, we are part of this community, too, and every patient is a friend, a family member, or a neighbor.
