Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM)

The FHP Osteopathic & Manipulative Medicine (OMM) Clinic is a hospital-based clinic, meaning that it is a department of Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. Visit our hospital-based clinic information page to learn more.

What is OMM?

Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) is a specialty practice using hands-on treatments to relieve restrictions of normal motion in the muscular system, bones, fascia, nerves and vascular systems.

While focusing on musculoskeletal injuries such as sports injuries or tendonitis, OMM treatments can also address pelvic pain and pain during pregnancy, breastfeeding difficulties, colic and abnormal head shapes in newborns.

What We Do

Our Care

Tanana Valley Clinic is proud to offer Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment. Our osteopathic physicians practice a “whole person” approach and encourage your body’s natural tendency toward good health.

They specialize in the treatment of back pain, musculoskeletal injuries, sports related injuries, and helping mothers-to-be with discomfort during pregnancies.

OMM can be used in the recovery and prevention of sports injuries, and can enhance performance in athletes. Soft tissue manipulation offers a variety of treatment for acute injuries and chronic issues.

Once proper structure and function is reestablished, the innate ability of the human body to heal itself can then restore full health.

TVC’s OMM physicians will work closely with your primary care provider to coordinate your treatments and care.

No referral needed to make an appointment. Check with your insurance company to ensure coverage.

FAQs

What is Osteopathic Manipulation Medicine (OMM)?
OMM is an approach using a variety of hands-on techniques to address the muscular system, bones, fascia, nerves, lymphatic and vascular systems. By manipulating a person's body in this way, our highly trained physicians can address a wide variety of ailments.

 How does it work?
Structure influences function, thus, if there is a problem in part of the body's structure, function in that area may be affected, and may also affect other areas. Our OMM practitioners use skillful knowledge and dexterous hands to physically manipulate a person's body to treat a wide range of conditions. Once proper structure and function is reestablished, the innate ability of the human body to heal itself can then restore full health.

Are OMM treatments effective?
Many patients return to full mobility and experience moderate or full pain relief after an OMM treatment. Some musculoskeletal issues may require a series of treatments.

Are OMM treatments painful?
Treatments are determined by the type of musculoskeletal or fascial issue or injury. An OMM provider will predominantly use their hands and body weight to achieve the restoration of structure, and will explain each technique to you prior to initiating the treatment. Some treatments may cause bruising, but the restoration of proper function outweighs the pain associated with improper function.

Will my insurance cover OMM treatments?
TVC accepts most insurances. We recommend, however, that you consult with your insurance provider to ensure if your OMM treatments are covered.
