Michael Carroll Cancer Center provides all aspects of cancer care and offers integrated programs in cancer diagnosis, treatment, clinical trials, education programs and prevention. Experienced physicians and staff administer cancer treatment such as chemo and radiation therapies.

In 2000, the Greater Fairbanks Hospital Foundation (the Foundation) made a huge promise to the community by building the Fairbanks Cancer Treatment Center, spearheaded by Dr. J. Michael Carroll, the first trained medical oncologist in Alaska. 

On July 15, 2011 the Fairbanks Cancer Treatment Center was rededicated in honor of J. Michael Carroll, acknowledging the contributions that Dr. Carroll made to the Fairbanks community as a person, and as a doctor. 

With the needs of the cancer patient in mind, the J. Michael Carroll Cancer Center (JMCCC) was designed to house both radiation therapy and an independent medical oncology practice. By co-locating both of these services with the hospital, cancer patients are able to access a variety of medical services in one location.

J. Michael Carroll Cancer Center offers compassionate care for patients with all types of cancer. Our highly skilled team of physicians, navigators, and staff are dedicated to providing advanced therapy options, state-of-the-art technologies and participation in the latest clinical trials to give our patients the highest level of cancer care close to home. 

We diagnose cancer in many ways. 

• A physical exam can be done to check your body for any lumps that may indicate the presence of a tumor. 
• Laboratory tests look for abnormalities in the blood that may be caused by cancer. 
• Imaging tests such as CT scans, Bone scans, MRIs, PET scans, and Ultrasounds are all useful studies that can help diagnose cancer and look for any cancer that might have spread elsewhere throughout the body. 
• Biopsies are also commonly used to both diagnose and determine the specific cancer type. A biopsy is when a sample of cells are collected and analyzed under a microscope.

The earlier a cancer is diagnosed and treated, the better chance of it being cured. Surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy are most often used to treat cancer. Immunotherapy, hormone therapy and clinical trials are also effective in the treatment of cancer.
