Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Technologist

This one-year apprenticeship combines online training and on-the-job learning. Designed to prepare participants to sit for ARRMIT certification. This training is designed for both new to radiology as well as ARRT certified technicians. Due to the pace and structure this opportunity is open internally only. Those interested are encouraged to investigate the Medical Imaging Assistant position if they are not certified as an ARRT.

Duties of an MRI Technologist include:

  • Prepare patients for procedures, to include setting up sterile fields, taking vital signs and patient history.

  • Perform procedures following radiation safety policies.

  • Perform and evaluates equipment quality control measurements.

  • Educate patients and families on procedures and treatments to be performed.

Pharmacy Techs

The term of the Pharmacy Tech apprenticeship is one year with 2000 hours of on-the-job training and 160 hours of related instruction through Penn Foster online. The Penn Foster curriculum is fully accredited and prepares participants to sit for both the PTCE and the ExCPT.

A pharmacy tech will, among other duties:

  • Select and/or prepare medications under direct supervision, as indicated on patient medication orders.

  • Charge/credit patients for medications and IV solutions as appropriate.

  • Repackage bulk medications into unit of dose packaging.

  • Use automated dispensing technology or requisition to restock medications to nursing and ancillary areas and restock medications to areas without automated dispensing.

  • Skills required of a candidate include good organizational, problem solving and computer skills, and good written and verbal communication skills. Candidates must pass an algebra exam as part of the recruitment process.

Phlebotomy Apprenticeship

The Phlebotomy Apprenticeship is a comprehensive one-year training program that seamlessly integrates classroom-style learning with hands-on experience in the field. This federally registered apprenticeship is designed to equip participants with the necessary skills to perform essential functions as a non-certified phlebotomist. Upon completion of the program, participants will receive support in preparing for and taking the NCCT exam for certification.

As part of their responsibilities, phlebotomists will:

  • Conduct venipuncture and capillary sticks for blood collection.
  • Assist in the preparation of samples for testing.
  • Register patients and verify insurance information.
  • Maintain and ensure the proper functioning of laboratory equipment.

By combining theoretical knowledge with practical application, this apprenticeship aims to produce competent and certified phlebotomy professionals ready to excel in their roles.

Sterile Processing Techs

The term of the Sterile Processing Tech apprenticeship is one year, with 2000 hours of on-the-job training, and 144 hours of related instruction through an online partnership with Purdue University. Upon completing the apprenticeship participants are qualified to test for the nationally recognized Certified Registered Central Service Technician status.

A sterile processing tech:

  • Decontaminates, assembles, and packages surgical instruments and performs necessary repairs, reassembling and storing specialized surgical instruments.

  • Operates steam autoclaves, ETO, and Gas Plasma sterilizers.

  • Responds to problem calls from the Operating Room

  • Candidates must have mechanical aptitude with the ability to break down moving parts, clean, lubricate and reassemble; problem-solve incomplete trays and missing instrumentation and have effective organizational, communication, and human relation skills.

Surgical Techs

The term of the apprenticeship is one year, with 2000 hours of on-the-job training and 144 hours of related on-the-job instruction. Coursework also includes online, book, and simulation training. Completion of this apprenticeship will qualify participants to sit for the NCCT Surgical Technologist exam to achieve national certification. Applicants with no previous health care experience are welcome to apply; however previous experience in a healthcare setting is strongly encouraged. The pace and demand of the program can be overwhelming for those new to the healthcare industry.

A surgical technologist will, among many other duties:

  • Prepare for surgical procedures. Pull instruments and supplies and ensure instruments are in good working order.

  • Anticipate the needs of the surgeon. Pass instruments, retract tissue, and operate equipment during surgery.

  • Assist with operating room turnover between cases. Participate in stocking, replenishing, and cleaning the OR.

  • Candidates have manual dexterity and the ability to maintain professional decorum in highly stressful emergent situations.

The surgical environment is uniquely challenging. Applicants are encouraged to research Surgical Technologists for a more complete picture of the career field.
